Motorcycle Brakes: A Breakdown

As the owner of a motorcycle, and an avid riding enthusiast, you may be aware of the service needs of your bike. But it never hurts to have information available to help you know the basics. Helping you understand your bike, and when to get it serviced is important to us here at BJ’s Cycles, so here is a breakdown about brakes.

How Often Do You Need to Replace Motorcycle Brake Pads?

Your bike’s brakes are a main component that helps keep you safe while you drive. They also are part of having your bike perform optimally. We recommend that you have your brakes and brake pads inspected approximately every 2500 miles or so. This will help keep you from any unforeseen problems with the braking system.

Generally, brake pads should last you about 20,000 miles. This can depend on how often you ride and how quickly your rack up the milage on your bike. BJ’s is always available for break inspections, so do not hesitate to call us for an appointment.

How Do You Know if Your Motorcycle Brakes are Bad?

There are a couple symptoms you can look for that indicate your brakes are needing replaced:

What you hear when you ride? If you are observing a gravelly, scraping sound as you ride this means the metal of your brake shoe is striking the rim

We have had a few nice days to get out and ride! Have you noticed that when you apply the brakes that there is a stickiness? This is an indicator that your brake pads may need to be replaced.

If you are like a lot of us, you probably check your bike over frequently. Have you noticed that the grooves in your pads are down to nothing? This is a sure sign it is time to have them replaced.

I’m Concerned About My Brakes, But it’s Not Time For Regular Maintenance

Checking parts of your brake system is very often part of your regular service schedule. Parts such as brake caliper pins and boots, pads and more are expected in your Harley Davidson service & maintenance, especially depending on your bikes milage.

With this in mind, it is never a bad time to have your brakes inspected if you have concerns, or experience the above mentioned symptoms. At BJ’s Cycles, it is our goal to keep your bike at it’s optimum performance, while keeping you safely on the road.
